September 18, 2000

Organ Crawl.  We visited three historic instruments in Ionia, a city about 40 miles to the east. Instruments demonstrated were the 1892 Hook & Hastings at First Baptist Church, the 1893 J. W. Steere organ at the First Christian Church and the 1900 Lyon and Healy organ at the Church of Saint Peter and Paul. Demonstrators were John Dibble, Verlyn Schultz, Dr. Kent Hill and Mary Cusack.

Dr. Michael Hawn of Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University (Texas), led us in a workshop on the use of ethnic music for enriching our worship services.

Dr. Greg Crowell of Trinity United Methodist Church presented a workshop on the performance and registration practices of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Dr. Roberta Gary of the University of Cincinnati led a workshop on the Alexander Technique concerning relaxation and ease of movement at the console.

The Calvin College Chapel was the site of a Junior Choir Festival. Clinicians were: Dr. Pearl Shangkuan, of Calvin College, and Paul Caldwell, director of the North American Choral Company.

Hymn Festival at Calvin Christian Reformed Church. Organist Dr. Kenneth Bos and Dr. Howard Slenk, director of the Calvin Church Choir. Dr. Emily Brink, worship and music editor for CRC Publications, was the planner for the service and also provided the commentary.

Istvan Ella presented a recital of organ music of Johann Sebastian Bach as part of the bi-annual local Bach Festival.

Music for Organ and Instruments.
Organists Shirley Spangler, Jill Betten, Dr. Janice Koop, Esther Korzilius, Raymond Haan and Verlyn Schultz presented a program of primarily hymn-based compositions for use in the worship service. Assisting were guests playing trumpet, flute, clarinet, marimba and violin.
