Pamela Decker

Pamela Decker, organist and composer, was born in 1955 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Five months later her family moved to San Francisco. She discovered the organ early in life and began serious study at the age of nine. She performed her first solo recital at the age of thirteen; since that time she has been active as solo recitalist, accompanist, composer, teacher, and church musician. Her studies included six years of piano, eighteen years of organ, four years of harpsichord, and nine years of composition. pamela_decker.jpg (9616 bytes)

She holds the Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree in organ performance, with emphasis also in composition, from Stanford University. During her doctoral study she was awarded a Fulbright Grant for study of organ and composition in Lübeck, West Germany. While in Germany she worked in both areas at the Musikhochschule Lübeck and was invited to perform in many venues. The Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), or North German Radio, made and broadcast a recording of her performance of her work Passacaglia (for organ) at the Lübeck Cathedral.

Dr. Decker is Associate Professor of Organ/Music Theory at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. She also serves as organist at Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Tucson. Her recital career is managed by Phyllis Stringham Concert Management; her primary publisher is Wayne Leupold Editions.

Compositions by Pamela Decker have been performed by American, Canadian, European, and Australian artists in at least sixteen countries. In 2002, she has had performances of her works in Moscow, Paris, Hamburg, London, and Vienna; there have been performances in the United States too numerous to list. Her works have been performed at national and regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists and in many other festivals and conferences. There are commercial recordings of her works on the Albany, Arkay, Gothic, ReZound (Loft), and Arktos labels.
